Storms of July 16-17, 2006

During the afternoon of July 16, 2006, a monster thunderstorm complex over NW Arizona migrated slowly westward into the deserts of Southern Califiornia. As the evening wore on the complex edged its way westward and intensified as it encountered the lifting effects of the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains. As it pushed onward into the Inland Empire around 11:30 pm the storm had intensified to the point of continuous intense lightning for at least an hour. By midnight the storm had entered the vicinity of Horsethief Canyon Ranch and the show was on! Much of the lightning was cloud-cloud, with some bands and forks stretching for 20 miles. The entire storm had finally passed on into Orange County and the Ontario area by 3am.
