Santiago Wildfire - 21 October to 8 November, 2007
A strong Santa Ana Wind event developed across Southern California the night of Saturday, 20 October, with wind gusts approaching 80 mph in areas of Malibu and northern LA County. By Sunday morning, wind gusts were peaking near 100mph in these areas and spread into Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties. Wildfires broke out all over these areas by either downed power lines or arson. By the time it was all over, there were 20 fires, nearly 2000 homes destroyed, and one-half million acres burned. The Santiago Fire, started by arson in the foothills of north Irvine, burned almost 29,000 acres on the west side of the Santa Ana mountain range, and threatened to cross the ridge near Santiago Peak and burn down into Temescal Valley. Tanker planes and firefighters fought hard for days to keep it from happenng. It was finally fully contained on 8 November, 18 days after it started, and was the longest running uncontrolled fire out of all of them. The following pictures were taken above Horsethief Canyon Ranch and other areas of Temescal Valley during this campaign.
