Mojave Desert near Pearblossom, Ca - July 26, 2003

The summer monsoon season was in full swing in the high desert of Southern California! Typically the most favored area for thunderstorm development in the western Mojave Desert is along what is known as the El Mirage Convergence Zone which roughly extends from the base of the San Gabriel Mtns between Pearblossom and Phelan to northeast of El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. I spent most of that day in this region along Rte 138 near the town of Pearblossom. These storms were nearly stationary and provided occasional heavy rain and pea-sized hail.
